The Lawrence Production Center in Lawrence, Kansas is a fast-paced, 3-shift manufacturing environment that produces Hallmark’s greeting cards and other specialty products. We bring Hallmark’s creative concepts to life by making the products that help people live more caring, connected lives full of meaningful moments!  The production center’s priorities include delivering outstanding product quality & service, while simultaneously reducing cycle times and our total cost of product.  We drive business performance through a focus on operational excellence, employee engagement, and Lean improvement focus across our teams.

 

Senior Director - Plant Operations:

The Senior Director - Plant Operations is responsible for leading the production center’s manufacturing processes and teams, including 4 direct reports, 600+ full-time employees, and a seasonal temporary workforce.  This is a top leadership role, reporting directly to the production center’s General Manager.  It’s a key part of the leadership team focused on delivering near-term production requirements, driving ongoing operational improvements, and developing longer term priorities, policies, and strategic direction within Hallmark’s manufacturing division.

 

This position will be responsible for:

 

Operational Leadership / Management 

  • Lead a broad set of manufacturing processes and teams to produce products within quality, service, and cost objectives in a short-cycle manufacturing environment to deliver production requirements and retail-driven strategic initiatives. Monitor, track, and implement key initiatives to deliver department and plant goals. Drive continuous improvement efforts for the plant to reduce cost, improve productivity, and increase serviceability.
  • Possess a strong technical understanding of fundamental manufacturing processes, techniques, & cost drivers, and develops and maintains a strong & thorough knowledge of Hallmark’s key production systems and procedures.
  • Develop and manage multi-million-dollar plant budgets, ensuring business performance is delivered and that expenditures are within established limits.
  • Drive strategic Lean initiatives and lead Lean improvement processes and problem-solving activities to deliver business priorities and enable breakthrough improvements. Utilize Lean tools and knowledge to continuously improve work processes, flow, and standard work.  Drive Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) to increase business performance and reduce total costs. 
  • Build and ensure strong relationships with plant employees & managers, and key internal & external business partners.  As a member of the plant senior leadership staff, actively collaborate to develop long-term strategies for flexible capacity, manufacturing capabilities, capital investment planning, and talent development.

 

 

People and Culture Leadership

  • Develops a culture that maximizes employee engagement
  • Drive a culture of strong employee engagement, bringing the best out of people and teams to deliver business results and ensure Hallmark’s positive culture is strong within the workplace.
  • Use lean principles and problem-solving techniques to engage employees in finding ways to systematically eliminate waste and to continuously improve processes and workflow.
  • Drive a strong safety mindset & culture to ensure a safe work environment for all employees.  Lead managers and employees to proactively eliminate hazards to ensure a safe work environment.  Ensure full compliance to all OSHA and company safety/EHS standards and practices.
  • Ensure effective and efficient staffing plans to meet varying production requirements, working with internal teams, other facilities, and external temp labor sources.
  • Coach managers and supervisors in employee engagement, talent development, recognition, and performance management.
  • Effectively lead direct & indirect employees through key Hallmark policy and/or business changes.
  • Support & advance Hallmark’s diversity & inclusion priorities.  Be attentive to diversity/inclusion and employee relations issues in the workplace, actively engage with the plant D&I Council, and support & encourage participation in plant-level D&I learning experiences.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s Degree 
  • 5 years Operational or Supply Chain Management experience
  • 4 years managing exempt employees
  • Lean management experience

 

ADDITIONAL PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Preferred candidate will be a proven leader; problem solver; possess a strong work ethic; and have excellent communications and interpersonal skills required to work closely with peers, stakeholders, and internal and external customers.
  • Bachelors Degree in Engineering, Business or Operations Management or a Master’s Degree
  • 6+ years Operational or Supply Chain Management experience in Manufacturing or Distribution environment
  • Previous Area/Department/Operations Manager experience in Manufacturing or Distribution environment
  • 2-3 years of Lean implementation/project management experience
  • Strong financial and analytical acumen
